One fundamental problem with martial arts and self defense is often that the wrong people are teaching. Many martial arts teachers are narcissistic person’s who’s psyches are poisoned by post traumatic stress disorder and/or the desire for toxic social power. When these teachers knowingly or unknowingly fall victim to their vices, the effect is that their “teaching” amounts to re-creation and role-playing trauma, violence, and narcissistic relationships.
The field of martial arts is especially prone to this perpetual loop of ignorance because it seems like when it comes to learning how to fight, might is right. Imagine if Mike Tyson told you that 2+2=5 and every time you disagreed, he punched you in the face. You would soon adapt to the new knowledge, especially if you knew as little about math, as you do about wrestling or boxing. After all, 2+2=5 feels a lot better than 2+2=4, and keep in mind that you don’t even know the math of boxing. This is a hallmark of how trauma affects the nervous system. We adapt in order to survive, and quite often we don’t even know that we were conditioned to accept an inferior pattern, until much later when we gain exposure to a greater truth.
Anyone interested in gaining empowerment through martial arts should consider that the ability for strangling or beating human beings senseless, may not be the absolute most important defining criteria for choosing a teacher. Also ask yourself, is the teacher is actually talented and passionate about teaching and empowering others, or are you just signing up to be a groupie? What is that experience going to do to bring you into resonance with your best life?
Pragmatism, experience, talent, and knowledge of the craft are all important. However, the movements of martial arts are just tools. The way in which you learn to express yourself with your tools will define the quality of the life experience that you create. Take note of how each teacher expresses theirself and what they communicate to you. Listen to what is said, without words.
